PC Running Slow? Master Its Health with These 3 Built-in Windows Tools

Remember when you first got your computer? It was lightning-fast, booting up in seconds and opening programs in a flash. But now, it groans under the weight of daily use, taking forever to start and stuttering through simple tasks.
Before you rush out to buy expensive "PC cleaner" software, you should know that Windows has a powerful, free, and built-in first-aid kit. Learning to use these three simple tools is like giving your PC a regular health check-up, and it can make a world of difference.
1. Disk Cleanup: Your Digital Decluttering Tool 🧹
Over time, your PC accumulates a staggering amount of digital junk—temporary internet files, old installer files, and countless other things you no longer need. Disk Cleanup is the perfect tool for safely finding and deleting this clutter to free up valuable space.
Think of it like cleaning out your garage. You're not throwing away your car, just the old paint cans and stacks of newspapers you don't need.
How to Use It:
Click the Start Menu, type Disk Cleanup, and press Enter.
In the pop-up, select the drive you want to clean (it's usually the C: drive) and click OK.
Windows will scan your drive and show you a list of files you can delete. Go ahead and check the boxes for things like Temporary Internet Files, Thumbnails, and the Recycle Bin.
For an even deeper clean, click the "Clean up system files" button. This will restart the scan and find old Windows Update files that can take up gigabytes of space.
Once you've made your selections, click OK to permanently delete the files and reclaim your disk space.
2. Defragment and Optimize Drives: Organizing Your Digital Library 📚
Imagine your computer's hard drive is a giant library. When you save a file, it’s like scattering the pages of a single book across dozens of different shelves. When you need to read that book, the computer has to run all over the library to find the pages. This is called fragmentation, and it can slow down older Hard Disk Drives (HDDs).
The Defragment and Optimize Drives tool neatly collects all those scattered pages and puts them together on one shelf, making them much faster to access.
Note for SSD users: If you have a modern Solid-State Drive (SSD), this tool performs a different function called "TRIM" or "Optimizing." You don't need to worry about the details—Windows knows what kind of drive you have and handles it perfectly.
How to Use It:
Click the Start Menu, type Defragment, and select "Defragment and Optimize Drives."
You'll see a list of your drives. The good news is that Windows automatically runs this process on a weekly schedule, so you probably won't have to do anything!
You can see the last run date and the current status. If for some reason a drive needs attention, you can simply click on it and hit the "Optimize" button.
3. Windows Security: Your Built-in Bodyguard 🛡️
You don't need to pay for a fancy antivirus subscription. The security tool built right into Windows 10 and 11, Windows Security, is a top-tier security suite that provides excellent, real-time protection against viruses, malware, and ransomware.
Think of it as a 24/7 security guard for your digital home. It checks the locks, monitors for intruders, and neutralizes threats before they can cause harm. You just need to make sure it's active and happy.
How to Check It:
Click the Start Menu, type Windows Security, and press Enter.
You'll be greeted by a dashboard. You're looking for green checkmarks, which mean all systems are go.
Click on "Virus & threat protection." From here, you can see when the last scan was performed and manually run a "Quick scan" if you want some extra peace of mind. The tool updates itself automatically, so you're always protected against the latest threats.
By making a habit of using these three tools just once a month, you can keep your computer running smoothly, securely, and efficiently—no third-party software required!
